Mechelen is a former capital of the Burgundian Netherlands, about 20 km north of Brussels Airport and midway to Antwerp. It is dominated by St Rumbold's Cathedral with its 97 m tower, which has a carillon, and has a compact historic centre with canal-side houses along the Dijle.
