Bom Jesus do Monte is a hilltop pilgrimage sanctuary about 5 km east of Braga, famous for its Baroque stairway of zigzagging flights with a water-powered funicular, dating from 1882. The road climbs from Braga by a bendy road lined with trees. The sanctuary has a car park at the top, but it fills on weekends and during the São João festivities in June. The stairway itself is for walkers.
The sanctuary is reached from the edge of Braga, in the parish of Tenões, and the hillside around it is wooded with chestnut and oak. The Baroque stairway is made of the Stairway of the Five Senses and the Stairway of the Three Virtues, with chapels and fountains at each landing. A hotel and a few restaurants stand near the top, and the Sameiro sanctuary lies on a neighbouring hill a few kilometres away. The area is busiest at weekends and on pilgrimage days, while winter weekdays are quiet and often misty.
Public transport: No direct public transport from the airport; take a coach to Braga and then TUB line 2 up the hill.
