Getting from Ponta Delgada João Paulo II Airport (PDL) to Furnas takes about 50 min by car on an empty road (50–65 min in heavy traffic) over 49 km via E-S and ER 1-1ª. Our private transfer costs €100 for a car with 1–3 passengers or €140 for a van with 4–8 — the vehicle price you see is the price you pay at booking.
On arrival: The driver waits in the arrivals hall of the airport's single terminal, after baggage reclaim, with a sign showing your name. If the flight is late, the driver adjusts to the real landing time; 60 minutes of waiting are included and help with the luggage is part of the service.
Furnas is a valley village in the east of São Miguel, around 45 km from Ponta Delgada, known for its geothermal activity: boiling fumaroles at the Caldeiras, hot springs, the Terra Nostra park and the cozido das Furnas stew cooked underground in volcanic soil. The route runs via Ribeira Grande or Vila Franca do Campo and then the mountain road to the valley, which is steep with sharp bends. The village centre gets crowded around lunchtime.
The Furnas valley holds a lake, Lagoa das Furnas, and the Caldeiras, a field of boiling springs and fumaroles with fumes and steam by the village centre. The Terra Nostra Park, with a large thermal pool of iron-rich orange water, is a short walk from the village, and the Poça da Dona Beija is another thermal pool in a garden nearby. Restaurants serve the cozido das Furnas at lunchtime, which is lowered into the ground in the morning. The valley is humid and cool, and the area is crowded in July and August.
Public transport: No confirmed regular direct public bus from the airport to Furnas; Varela serves other east coast towns from Ponta Delgada.
