Arcachon is a seaside town on the Bassin d'Arcachon, 55 km south-west of Bordeaux, known for its oyster farms, the Ville d'Hiver district and the Dune du Pilat 10 km south. The drive from the airport joins the A63 and then the A660, ending at the basin. In July and August the A660 backs up on Friday and Sunday, and car parks near the beach fill early. The Dune du Pilat has its own car park and a staircase to the top; no cars drive onto the dune, and a wooden staircase leads up the slope, though the dune can also be climbed on foot over the sand.
The town of Arcachon looks onto the basin, with the beach promenade, the Boulevard de la Plage, and two piers, the Jetée Thiers and the Jetée d'Eyrac. The Ville d'Hiver district climbs the wooded hill behind the centre, with 19th-century villas, and the station is about ten minutes' walk from the seafront. Boats cross the basin to Cap Ferret, and oyster huts line the harbours of neighbouring villages. The Dune du Pilat, the tallest sand dune in Europe, lies south of the town. Summer is crowded and the winter months are calm.
Public transport instead: SNCF TER Nouvelle-Aquitaine train TER from Bordeaux Saint-Jean (after tram A from the airport) to Arcachon — about 45–60 min, about hourly, 1 change. No direct service; tram A to Bordeaux Saint-Jean, then TER to Arcachon.
