Leuven is a university city 25 km east of Brussels Airport, home to KU Leuven, one of Europe's oldest universities, and to the headquarters of the AB InBev brewery. The route follows the E40, which runs from Brussels towards Liège, and then the Leuven ring. The Oude Markt, known as the longest bar in Europe, and the Gothic town hall are inside a mainly pedestrian centre, so the car stops at the nearest permitted street. Student events at the start and end of the academic year can crowd the centre.
The centre of Leuven is a ten-minute walk from the railway station along Bondgenotenlaan. The Grote Markt has the Gothic town hall opposite St Peter's Church, and the Oude Markt, lined with bars, lies a few streets away. The Groot Begijnhof, a UNESCO-listed beguinage, is owned by the university and has student housing among the brick houses. The M museum stands near the Vaartkom canal basin. During term time the streets fill with students, while in July and August the town is quieter.
Public transport instead: SNCB/NMBS train IC / S-train from Brussels Airport-Zaventem station to Leuven — about 15–20 min, several trains per hour.
