Getting from Kavala Airport (KVA) to Xanthi takes about 40 min by car on an empty road (40–50 min in heavy traffic) over 45 km via A2 and EO2. Our private transfer costs €70 for a car with 1–3 passengers or €100 for a van with 4–8 — the vehicle price you see is the price you pay at booking.
On arrival: The driver waits in the arrivals hall of the Kavala airport terminal, after baggage reclaim and the customs exit, holding a sign with your name. If the flight is late, the driver adjusts to the real landing time; 60 minutes of waiting are included and help with the luggage is part of the service.
Xanthi is the capital of the neighbouring Xanthi regional unit, in Thrace, at the foot of the Rhodope mountains. From the airport the road joins the Egnatia Odos motorway (A2), a tolled road, and heads north-east, crossing the Nestos river, which marks the boundary between Macedonia and Thrace. The distance is about 40 to 45 km and the drive takes around 35 to 45 minutes. Traffic on the motorway is usually light; the slower part is the entry into town.
The Old Town of Xanthi climbs the hillside above the central square, with cobbled lanes and the 19th-century mansions of tobacco merchants, one of which houses the Folklore Museum. Many of these lanes are narrow and one-way, so cars stop close by rather than at every door. The central square with its clock tower is the hub of cafes and shops, and a large open-air market is held in town on Saturdays. Hotels are mostly in the modern centre and near the university district on the southern edge.
Public transport: No direct public service from the airport. The airport's website says onward travel to Xanthi is possible from the KTEL station in Chrysoupoli; there is no confirmed airport bus to Chrysoupoli with a published timetable and fare, so check with KTEL Kavala.
