Aix-en-Provence is a university town 30 km north of the airport, known for the Cours Mirabeau lined with plane trees, its fountains and Cézanne's studio. The road is the A8 motorway, and the shuttle runs from the airport to the Aix bus station. The old town inside the ring road is largely pedestrian, so cars stop at the edge or at the nearest permitted street. The Aix festival in July brings crowds, and the A8 is slow at weekday rush hours.
The Cours Mirabeau, a tree-lined avenue, separates the old town to the north from the Mazarin quarter to the south, and the Rotonde fountain stands at its western end, close to the bus station. The Saint-Sauveur cathedral and the Place d'Albertas are in the old streets, and market stalls fill the Place Richelme and Place de la Madeleine in the morning. Cézanne's studio is about two kilometres north of the centre, on a hillside. The town is busiest in July for the festival, and quieter in winter.
