Douro Valley from Porto Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) by private transfer: €200 per car (1–3 people) or €250 per van (4–8), fixed per vehicle and identical to the checkout price. On the road it is 125 km, roughly 1h 25min when traffic is light and 1h 25min – 1h 50min when it is not.
Meeting point: The driver waits in the arrivals hall of the airport terminal, after baggage reclaim and the customs exit, holding a sign with your name. Flight tracking is included, the first hour after landing is free waiting time, and the driver carries your bags to the car.
The Douro Valley is the terraced wine region east of Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, with Peso da Régua and Pinhão as its main towns. By road the way in is the A4 and A24, or the A7 towards Vila Real, and then the N222 which follows the river with many hairpin bends. Visits are usually combined with quinta tastings, and the harvest in September and early October brings more traffic and farm vehicles on the narrow roads.
The Douro Valley is long, running roughly 100 km from Peso da Régua to the Spanish border, so the experience depends on the stop. Peso da Régua has the Douro Museum and the train station by the river, and Pinhão, further east, has a station decorated with azulejo panels showing the wine harvest. Quintas offer tastings and lunches, often booked in advance. Cruises leave from Régua and Pinhão in season. The valley is greenest in spring, hot in summer and golden in October, with the grape harvest, or vindima, from roughly mid-September.
Public transport instead: Comboios de Portugal (CP) train Linha do Douro from Porto (Campanhã or São Bento) to Peso da Régua — about 1h 45min – 1h 50min, several trains a day, 1 change. There is no direct public transport from the airport; the realistic combination is Metro Line E into Porto and then the CP Douro line train to Peso da Régua (check that the line is fully open, as works were scheduled in 2025-26).
