Getting from Porto Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) to Guimarães takes about 45 min by car on an empty road (45–55 min in heavy traffic) over 55 km via A 3 and A 7. Our private transfer costs €110 for a car with 1–3 passengers or €160 for a van with 4–8 — the vehicle price you see is the price you pay at booking.
On arrival: The driver waits in the arrivals hall of the airport terminal, after baggage reclaim and the customs exit, holding a sign with your name. If the flight is late, the driver adjusts to the real landing time; 60 minutes of waiting are included and help with the luggage is part of the service.
Guimarães is a walled medieval town about 55 km north-east of Porto airport, called the birthplace of Portugal because Afonso Henriques was born here. The route follows the A3 and A7 motorways, which are tolled. The historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, around Largo da Oliveira is pedestrian with limited vehicle access, so the car stops at the nearest permitted street, often near the Alameda de São Dâmaso.
Guimarães' old town is compact and walkable. Largo da Oliveira, with its Gothic canopy shrine opposite the church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, flows into Praça de São Tiago, ringed by terraces. From there Rua de Santa Maria climbs towards the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza and the castle. Newer hotels and the Toural square are a short way south, outside the former walls. The Penha mountain, with its cable car, sits above the city. Early August brings the Gualterianas festival, while spring and autumn are comfortable for walking.
