Kinderdijk is a polder landscape south-east of Rotterdam with 19 windmills from the 18th century, listed by UNESCO. The route from Rotterdam crosses the Nieuwe Maas and runs along the A15 towards Alblasserdam. The windmill grounds are car-free: vehicles use the visitor car park, and the paths along the canals are on foot or by bike. Windmill interiors are open on set days and the site is busiest in spring and summer; a boat ride along the canals is a seasonal extra.
The Kinderdijk windmills stand in two groups, Nederwaard and Overwaard, along the canals of the Alblasserwaard polder, a short way from the village of Alblasserdam. Visitors enter through the Visitor Centre and can walk or cycle along the dikes, and one of the mills can be visited inside as a museum. The Waterbus pier sits close to the windmills, so travelling on the river is a popular alternative to the road. The landscape is flat and exposed, so wind and rain are common, and the site is quietest on winter mornings.
Public transport instead: Rotterdam Waterbus water bus Waterbus (seasonal direct line; check current timetable) from Rotterdam Centrum (Erasmusbrug) to Kinderdijk — about 30–45 min, seasonal, several per day, 2 changes. No direct public transport; bus 33 to Rotterdam, then the Waterbus to Kinderdijk.
