Carcassonne is a fortified town in the Aude, about 95 km south-east of Toulouse, known for La Cité, a medieval citadel with 52 towers and two rings of walls, listed by UNESCO. The road route follows the A61. The Cité is a pedestrian zone for most of the day, with a car park outside the Porte Narbonnaise, and the lower town (Bastide Saint-Louis) is open to cars. The railway station is in the lower town, about 2 km from the Cité. July and August bring heavy crowds and the Bastille Day fireworks.

On 14 July the Cité is lit by fireworks, and summer evenings bring a music festival.
