Getting from Vienna Airport (VIE) to Wachau Valley takes about 1h 25min by car on an empty road (1h 25min – 1h 50min in heavy traffic) over 114 km via S5 and A22. Our private transfer costs €230 for a car with 1–3 passengers or €280 for a van with 4–8 — the vehicle price you see is the price you pay at booking.
On arrival: The driver waits in the arrivals hall of the terminal your flight lands at (Terminal 1, 2 or 3), after baggage reclaim and the customs exit, holding a sign with your name. If the flight is late, the driver adjusts to the real landing time; 60 minutes of waiting are included and help with the luggage is part of the service.
The Wachau is a Danube valley in Lower Austria between Melk and Krems, about 90 km west of the airport. The drive follows the A1 West and the Danube road B3 along the valley, in about 1 hour 15 minutes. The valley road is two-lane and busy in the apricot-blossom season in spring and the autumn wine harvest. Villages such as Dürnstein have restricted access in the centre.
The Wachau is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape of vineyards and apricot orchards, with the Melk Abbey at its western end and the town of Krems at the eastern end. Dürnstein has a blue baroque abbey tower and a castle ruin, and Spitz and Weissenkirchen are wine villages. Danube boats connect Melk, Spitz, Dürnstein and Krems in season. The car can stop at the village car parks, since the centres are small and pedestrian.
Public transport: No direct public service from the airport; the usual route is via Vienna (Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof or Hauptbahnhof) to Krems or Melk by train, then a regional bus or Danube boat in the valley.
