San José is the main village of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, a protected volcanic coastline of cliffs, coves and dunes about 30 km east of the airport. The route leaves the coast and crosses the flat Níjar plain on regional roads, past greenhouses and small farming villages, before winding down through the volcanic hills of the park to the bay of San José. There are no tolls. Building and traffic rules inside the park are strict, and the village keeps a low-rise, whitewashed look.
The village spreads around a sandy bay with a small marina at its southern end and a short promenade with restaurants. The well-known beaches of Los Genoveses and Mónsul lie a few kilometres south-west along an unpaved road through the park; in summer car access to them can be limited when the car parks are full. La Isleta del Moro and Los Escullos are small coastal settlements to the north-east. Most visitors come between spring and autumn for beaches, snorkelling and walking trails along the coast.
