Turgutreis is a town on the west coast of the Bodrum peninsula, with a big marina, a weekly market and a long sandy beach. It sits further from the airport than Bodrum town, and the drive takes the road across the peninsula, then follows the western coast road. The roads are busy in July and August, and the town centre has narrow, congested streets near the market. Minibuses have a major presence on the main roads.
Turgutreis is built around its marina, the long beach promenade and a lively centre of shops and restaurants. It is named after the Ottoman admiral Turgut Reis, and his statue stands at the waterfront. Boat trips leave from the harbour in season. Gümüşlük, with its fish restaurants over the water, lies a short drive to the south, and Yalıkavak is just north. The season peaks from June to September, and the town stays open year-round with a smaller local population in winter.
Public transport: No direct public service to Turgutreis; the Havaş shuttle goes to Bodrum central bus station, and local dolmuş minibuses run from there to the surrounding districts.
