Otranto is a walled town on the Adriatic, the easternmost town of mainland Italy, about 85 km south-east of the airport. The route runs on the SS613 to Lecce and continues south on the SS16 through the Salento countryside to the coast; there are no tolls. In summer the old town inside the walls is closed to traffic for much of the day, so the driver stops outside the walls, near the harbour or the main car parks.
The old town is compact: the Aragonese Castle with its round towers stands at the southern edge, and the cathedral, known for its large twelfth-century floor mosaic, is a short walk uphill. Below the walls lie the harbour and the town beach. North of Otranto are the long sandy beaches of the Alimini lakes, and to the south the coast road leads past the Punta Palascia cape and the former bauxite quarry lake towards Porto Badisco and Santa Cesarea Terme. Most visitors come between June and September.
Public transport instead: Pugliairbus (Cotrap) bus airport shuttle from Brindisi Airport to Lecce (then train to Otranto). No direct public transport from the airport to Otranto; take the Pugliairbus shuttle to Lecce and then a Ferrovie del Sud Est train to Otranto, usually with a change at Maglie (https://www.fseonline.it/).
