Sozopol is an old fishing town on the coast south of Burgas, on the site of the ancient Greek colony of Apollonia. From the airport the route first runs south into Burgas and round the city, then follows the coastal road south past the salt pans and the resort of Chernomorets. The whole trip stays on ordinary roads with no tolls. On summer weekends and in the evening the road between Burgas and Sozopol can be slow, as it is the main route to all resorts on the southern coast.
Sozopol is divided into the old town on a rocky peninsula and the new town on the mainland, linked by a narrow neck of land near the harbour. The old town keeps stone-and-timber houses, small churches and sections of fortification walls along its rocky shore, and its streets are narrow, so vehicles stop at its edge. The new town has the larger hotels and two sandy town beaches, while the small islands of Saint Ivan and Saint Petar lie just offshore to the north.
Public transport: No direct public service from the airport; the airport operator lists bus line 15 to the central bus station in Burgas, where buses and minibuses leave for the resorts south of the city. No official timetable or fare for the onward trip was.
