Ayia Napa is the party resort on the south-east coast of Cyprus, about 45 km from Larnaca airport, with sandy beaches such as Nissi Beach, the Cape Greco sea caves and the 16th-century Venetian monastery in the town centre. The route follows the A3 motorway and then the coast road past Protaras. The centre has a pedestrian zone around Makarios Avenue and bar streets, so the driver stops at the nearest allowed street. Summer weekends and July-August bring heavy evening traffic.
Ayia Napa has three main zones. The resort centre, around the square near the Venetian monastery and the bar streets, is the nightlife core. Nissi Beach lies a few kilometres west, with turquoise water and sandbanks, and Makronissos beach with its rock-cut tombs is on the road to the south-west. Hotels are spread along the coast road towards Cape Greco, where a national forest park has sea caves and a walking trail. The season runs roughly from April to October, with many venues closing in winter.
Public transport: No direct airport bus to Ayia Napa; the usual route is the airport bus to Larnaca and an intercity bus onward, about 40 minutes for the second leg.
