Limassol is Cyprus's second city and main port, about 65 km south-west of Larnaca airport, with a seafront promenade, the medieval castle and the Old Port. The drive follows the A1 motorway along the south coast. The old town near the Old Port is partly pedestrian, so the driver stops at the nearest open street. Traffic is heavy on the A1 at rush hours, especially near Limassol itself.
Limassol's waterfront runs for several kilometres. The Old Port and the medieval castle, which holds the Cyprus Medieval Museum, stand at the heart of the old town, with the Molos promenade and park stretching east along the sea. Further east are the tourist hotels of the Amathus area, and the Limassol Marina, with new high-rise towers, is just west of the Old Port. Many streets in the old town are narrow, and the city's busiest times are the Wine Festival in late August and the Carnival parade before Lent.
