Tossa de Mar is a small seaside town north of Lloret, about 46 km by road from the airport. Drivers either go inland via Llagostera and the GI-681, which crosses the wooded Cadiretes massif, or follow the coast through Lloret on the GI-682, a narrow road with many bends above the cliffs. Both end in the valley of the Riera de Tossa, behind the beach. On summer weekends the coastal road and the parking areas at the entrance to the town fill up quickly.
The landmark of Tossa is the Vila Vella, a medieval walled town on the headland at the southern end of Platja Gran, with towers, a lighthouse and narrow stepped lanes that cars cannot enter. The newer town with most shops and restaurants spreads behind the beach, and smaller coves such as Mar Menuda and Cala Llevadó lie to the north and south. Hotels are mostly within walking distance of the beach, so the driver stops at the hotel or the nearest street open to traffic.
