Almuñécar is the main resort town of the Costa Tropical, on the coast of Granada province between La Herradura and Salobreña. From the airport the route goes round Granada and follows the A-44 motorway south through the valley of Lecrín and down to the coast, then turns west on the A-7 coastal motorway, with tunnels and viaducts above the sea. The descent from the Suspiro del Moro pass to the coast is long and steep, and summer weekends bring heavier traffic towards the beaches.
The old town climbs the hill crowned by the San Miguel castle, with narrow streets that are partly pedestrian. Hotels and apartments line the seafront promenades of Puerta del Mar and San Cristóbal beaches, either side of the Peñón del Santo rock, and continue east towards Velilla. The bus station is on Avenida de Juan Carlos I near the centre, and La Herradura with its bay and the Marina del Este harbour is about 7 km west.
Public transport instead: Alsa bus 245 Granada Airport – Granada from Bus stop on level 0 outside the arrivals area of the terminal to Granada bus station (Estación de Autobuses, Carretera de Jaén) — about 30–35 min, timed to scheduled flights; no night service. Alsa bus Granada – Almuñécar from Granada bus station to Almuñécar bus station (Avenida de Juan Carlos I), several runs a day, see the Alsa timetable, 1 change. No direct public transport from the airport: Alsa bus 245 to Granada bus station, then the Alsa coach to Almuñécar.
