Riegersburg is a village in the south-east of Styria, about 60 km east of Graz airport, in the Steirisches Vulkanland. The drive uses the A2 motorway to Gleisdorf and then local roads via Feldbach, taking about 50 minutes. Roads in the volcanic land region are two-lane and winding. The castle stands on a volcanic rock above the village and is approached by a road, a lift or a steep footpath.
Riegersburg castle is among the best-known castles in Austria and stands on a rock about 100 metres above the village. The car park is at the foot of the rock, and the way up is by lift or a stepped path of about 15 minutes. The region around is a wine and ham area with farm shops and the Zotter chocolate factory nearby. The village itself is small, with a few inns and guesthouses along the road beneath the castle.
Public transport: No direct public connection from the airport; the usual route is via Graz Hauptbahnhof and regional bus or train to Feldbach or Riegersburg.
