Semmering is a mountain pass and resort on the border of Styria and Lower Austria, about 100 km north-east of Graz airport. The drive uses the A2 Süd motorway north-east towards Vienna, and the S6 Semmering expressway, crossing the Semmering tunnel, in about 1 hour 10 minutes. Austrian motorways require a vignette and a toll applies in tunnels. In winter, the pass is subject to snow, and chains may be needed on the old pass road.
Semmering is known for the Semmering railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with viaducts and tunnels climbing the pass. The resort has historic grand hotels such as the Panhans and the Südbahnhotel, and the ski area on the Hirschenkogel is reached by a gondola in winter. The Semmering station is at the top of the pass. Hikers use paths such as the Adlitzgraben and the Fischerhof route. The village has one main road, and the car can stop near the hotels.
Public transport: No direct public connection from the airport; the usual route is via Graz Hauptbahnhof and the Südbahn (Semmering line) trains to Semmering station.
