Cádiz is one of the oldest cities in Western Europe, built on a narrow peninsula with the Atlantic on one side and the Bay of Cádiz on the other. From the airport the route runs south on the A-4 motorway past Jerez and El Puerto de Santa María; the former toll section of the AP-4 has been free since 2020. Cars then cross into the city either over the tall Constitution of 1812 bridge from Puerto Real or along the isthmus from San Fernando. Summer weekends bring slow traffic at the city entrances.
The old town occupies the tip of the peninsula: the Cathedral faces the sea on Campo del Sur, La Caleta beach sits between the castles of San Sebastián and Santa Catalina, and the cruise terminal and railway station are by the port on the bay side. The newer part of the city stretches south along the long Playa de la Victoria, where most beach hotels are. Old-town streets are narrow and partly restricted, so cars stop at nearby squares such as Plaza de San Juan de Dios or on the seafront avenues.
Public transport instead: Renfe Cercanías Cádiz train C-1 from Aeropuerto de Jerez station to Cádiz station — about 57 min, several departures a day, 365 days a year. Renfe Media Distancia train Seville–Cádiz from Aeropuerto de Jerez station to Cádiz station — about 47 min, 8 stops a day at the airport. Consorcio de Transportes Bahía de Cádiz (Transportes Generales Comes) bus M-050 / M-052 / M-053 from Aeropuerto bus stop to Cádiz, M-050 daily; M-052 and M-053 from the airport Monday to Friday only.
