Sanlúcar de Barrameda sits where the Guadalquivir river meets the Atlantic, opposite the Doñana National Park, and is known for manzanilla wine and its seafood. From the airport the road crosses or skirts Jerez and continues west on the A-480 dual carriageway through vineyards of the sherry area. The route is flat and straightforward. In August the town hosts its historic horse races on the beach, and summer weekends bring more traffic from Jerez and Seville.
The town has two levels: the Barrio Alto on the hill with the Castle of Santiago, the Palacio de Orleans-Borbón and many bodegas, and the Barrio Bajo below with the lively Plaza del Cabildo. The riverside district of Bajo de Guía, about a kilometre away, is lined with fish restaurants and is where boats leave for trips across the river to Doñana. Beaches run along the estuary towards Bonanza and the Chipiona road. Some streets in the centre are narrow or pedestrian.
Public transport instead: Renfe Cercanías Cádiz train C-1 from Aeropuerto de Jerez station to Jerez de la Frontera station (then bus to Sanlúcar) — about 9 min, several departures a day, 365 days a year. Consorcio de Transportes Bahía de Cádiz (Empresa Monforte) bus M-970 / M-971 from Jerez de la Frontera bus station to Sanlúcar de Barrameda, 1 change. No direct public transport from the airport to Sanlúcar de Barrameda; take the C-1 or regional train to Jerez de la Frontera station and change to the M-970 or M-971 bus at the neighbouring bus station.
