St Paul's Bay, with Buġibba and Qawra, is a holiday resort area on the north-east of Malta, about 25 km from the airport, named for the shipwreck of Saint Paul described in the Acts of the Apostles. The road runs north via the Coast Road or the Mosta bypass. Summer weekends bring queues around Mosta and on the Coast Road. The Buġibba square and the promenade are pedestrian, so the driver stops at the hotel entrance or nearest open road.
St Paul's Bay is the old fishing core, with a small harbour, while Buġibba and Qawra, to the east, are the tourist neighbourhoods built from the 1960s. Buġibba Square and the pedestrian promenade have restaurants, bars and souvenir shops, and the Malta National Aquarium stands at Qawra Point. Hotels sit along the seafront. Small rocky swimming spots and lidos replace sandy beaches. Mellieħa Bay's sandy beach is a short drive north. The resort is busiest in summer and attracts many British and Maltese visitors in July and August.
Public transport instead: Malta Public Transport (Tallinja) bus X1 / X3 (express); Tallinja Direct to Buġibba reported from Malta airport to St Paul's Bay / Qawra / Buġibba, regular.
