Cangas de Onís is the main gateway to the western Picos de Europa, in eastern Asturias. From the airport the route runs along the A-8 and the A-66 towards Oviedo, then turns east on the A-64 motorway towards Villaviciosa before joining the N-634 through Nava, Infiesto and Arriondas along the Sella and Piloña valleys. The last section follows the N-625 up the Sella to the town. Summer and holiday weekends bring heavy traffic on the N-634 around Arriondas.
The town centre is compact, gathered around the high-arched medieval bridge over the Sella, known locally as the Puente Romano, and the main street, Avenida de Covadonga. Hotels and guesthouses are spread through the centre and along the river. The sanctuary of Covadonga lies about 11 km further up the valley, and the mountain road from there to the Lakes of Covadonga has restricted access for private cars during peak periods, with a bus service operating instead.
Public transport instead: Alsa bus Aeropuerto de Asturias - Avilés - Gijón - Oviedo (airport bus) from Asturias Airport bus stop to Oviedo, approximately every hour, daily between 06:00 and 00:00. Alsa bus Oviedo - Cangas de Onís from Oviedo bus station (Pepe Cosmen) to Cangas de Onís — about 1h 30min, several daily departures, roughly 06:30 to 21:35, 1 change. No direct public transport from the airport to Cangas de Onís: take the Alsa airport bus to Oviedo, then an Alsa coach from Oviedo bus station to Cangas de Onís.
