Parikia is the capital of Paros and its main ferry port, on a wide bay on the west coast. The airport lies in the south-west near Alyki, roughly 10 km away, and the drive north on the main west-coast road passes the turn-offs for Pounta, the small port for the boat to Antiparos. The trip normally takes around 15 to 20 minutes. Traffic thickens near the harbour when large ferries arrive or depart, especially in July and August, and the town has a one-way ring road around its centre.
The ferry quay sits at the heart of Parikia, with the old windmill on the waterfront roundabout and the Panagia Ekatontapiliani church a few minutes on foot inland. Behind the seafront, the old town is a maze of whitewashed lanes around Market Street and the Venetian Kastro, closed to cars, so vehicles stop on the coastal road or at a nearby car park. Most hotels are either in these lanes, along the quieter south shore towards Krios, or north of the port at Livadia beach, about ten minutes' walk from the quay.
