Litochoro is a town at the foot of Mount Olympus, about 90 km south-west of the airport. The route follows the ring road and the A1 Thessaloniki-Athens motorway south via Katerini, then a short road up to Litochoro, in around 1 hour 10 minutes. Tolls are charged on the A1 motorway. The final road to Prionia, the start of the main hiking trails, is narrow and winding.
Litochoro is the main base for climbing Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece. The trailheads are at Prionia, about 18 km above the town, and the Enipeas gorge path begins at the edge of Litochoro. The town has tavernas, small hotels and a seafront at Plaka Litochoro on the Thermaic Gulf, 5 km below. The old town square is small, so the car can stop near it. Dion archaeological park is about 15 km north.
Public transport instead: Hellenic Train train Thessaloniki - Athens line from Thessaloniki railway station (after reaching the city) to Litochoro (Plaka Litochoro station), a few trains per day, 1 change. No direct public service from the airport; the usual route is via Thessaloniki and a KTEL Pierias coach or a train on the Athens line to Litochoro.
