Matera in Basilicata is famous for the Sassi, ancient cave dwellings carved into the ravine and listed by UNESCO, about 65 km south-west of Bari. The route uses the SS96 and the SS99. The Sassi districts, Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, are pedestrian and steep, and the city centre has a ZTL, so the driver stops at the nearest permitted point and walking with luggage is on stairs and cobbles. Matera's Sassi districts fall down the side of the Gravina ravine below Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the main square of the modern town. Across the ravine the Murgia plateau holds rock-hewn churches, reached by a path from the Sassi. The Matera Centrale station of the FAL railway is about a kilometre from the main square. Summer is hot and the stone lanes are slippery after rain, so winter and spring are the quieter times.
