The Giant's Causeway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the north coast of County Antrim, about 81 km from the airport, where some 40,000 interlocking basalt columns step down into the sea. The road heads north on the A26 past Antrim, Ballymena and Ballymoney, then follows minor roads through the countryside to Bushmills and the Causeway Road. In summer and at weekends the coast roads around the site carry heavy tour-coach traffic, and the visitor car park fills early in the day.
Vehicles stop at the visitor centre on the cliff top, managed by the National Trust; from there a path runs downhill for about 1 km to the stones, and cliff-top trails continue along the headlands. The village of Bushmills, with its whiskey distillery, is about 3 km inland, while the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge near Ballintoy and the Dark Hedges beech avenue lie within roughly 20 km. Portrush and Portstewart, the main seaside resorts of the Causeway Coast, are about 12 km to the west and have most of the area's hotels.
Public transport instead: Translink (Ulsterbus) bus 109A (airLink) from Belfast International Airport to Antrim bus and rail station. Translink (NI Railways) train Belfast - Derry~Londonderry line from Antrim to Coleraine, 1 change. Translink (Ulsterbus) bus 402 Causeway Rambler / 172 from Coleraine Bus and Rail Centre to Bushmills and the Giant's Causeway (towards Ballycastle), 2 changes. No direct public transport from the airport to the Giant's Causeway: the usual combination is bus 109A to Antrim, the train to Coleraine and then the Causeway Rambler or route 172 along the coast; Translink's airLink add-on ticket covers the airport bus for rail passengers travelling to Coleraine.
