Bayonne is the historic capital of the French Basque Country, a fortified river town where the Nive flows into the Adour about 6 km from the sea. From the airport the road crosses Anglet towards the east and reaches the old town near the Vauban ramparts and the Place des Basques. Bayonne has a dense one-way system and narrow streets in the centre. During the Fetes de Bayonne, held for five days in late July or early August, much of the centre is closed to traffic and access is controlled.
The city is split by its two rivers into three districts. Grand Bayonne, on the left bank of the Nive, holds the Gothic Cathedral of Sainte-Marie, the cloister, the Chateau-Vieux and arcaded shopping streets, many of them pedestrian. Across the Nive, Petit Bayonne has the Basque Museum, the Bonnat-Helleu museum and the riverside bars of the quai Galuperie. North of the Adour lies Saint-Esprit, with the railway station and the coach stops. Cars stop on the quays or at the edge of the pedestrian area, a few minutes' walk from the cathedral.
Public transport instead: TXIK TXAK (Syndicat des mobilités Pays Basque-Adour) bus 3 (Saint-Jean-de-Luz Halte Routière – Gare de Bayonne) from Aéroport de Biarritz stop, airport bus station to Mairie de Bayonne, continuing to Gare de Bayonne-Parvis — about 18–26 min, €1.40 single ticket, about every 15 min on weekdays, every 20 min on Saturdays, every 30 min on Sundays (timetable 28 September 2026 – 25 June 2027).
