San Sebastian, Donostia in Basque, is the main city of the Spanish province of Gipuzkoa, about 20 km beyond the border on the Bay of La Concha. From the airport the route follows the A63 south past Saint-Jean-de-Luz, crosses the Bidasoa river into Spain near Biriatou and continues on the AP-8 past Irun before descending into the city. Both motorways are tolled. The border itself has no routine stop, but occasional police checks can slow traffic, and summer weekends bring queues on the AP-8 near Irun.
The city curves around La Concha beach, with the island of Santa Clara in the bay and Monte Igueldo and Monte Urgull at either end. The Parte Vieja, the old town at the foot of Monte Urgull, is packed with pintxos bars and is largely closed to cars, so drop-offs are made on the boulevard at its edge. South of it lies the grid of the Centro with the Buen Pastor cathedral and the main shopping streets. Across the Urumea river, the Gros district faces Zurriola beach, popular with surfers, and the Kursaal congress centre.
Public transport instead: Alsa bus Biarritz Airport – Donostia / San Sebastian from Biarritz airport bus station, Alsa bays outside the terminal to Donostia / San Sebastian — about 45–50 min, timetable and fares by travel date from the operator. TXIK TXAK (Syndicat des mobilités Pays Basque-Adour) bus 3, then 4 from Aéroport de Biarritz stop, airport bus station to Gare d'Hendaye (change at Saint-Jean-de-Luz Halte Routière), line 3 about every 15 min and line 4 about every 30 min on weekdays (timetables from 28 September and 2 November 2026), 1 change. Besides the Alsa coach, there is no single local line to San Sebastian. The local option is TXIK TXAK line 3 to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, line 4 to Hendaye station and the Euskotren Topo train across the border to Donostia; the combined Euskopass bus and train return ticket costs 6.50 euros.
