Kissamos is a port town in the north-west corner of Crete, roughly 45 km west of the airport. The drive follows the north-coast national road (E75) and then climbs through the Kissamos hills, taking about 50 minutes. It is the ferry port for the Kythira and Peloponnese ferries. Roads beyond Kissamos towards Falasarna, Elafonisi and Balos are narrow and winding, and the Balos track is unpaved.
The town of Kissamos has a small harbour, a seafront promenade and an archaeological museum in the former market building. Hotels are along the seafront and in the villages of Kalathas and Drapanias. Most visitors come for Balos lagoon and Gramvousa, reached by boat from the port, and for the beaches at Falasarna to the west and Elafonisi to the south-west. The ferry port is on the north-east side of the town.
Public transport: No direct public connection from the airport. The usual route is the KTEL airport bus to Chania bus station and then a KTEL coach west to Kissamos (Kastelli).
