Getting from Chania Airport (CHQ) to Rethymno takes about 1h 35min by car on an empty road (1h 35min – 2h in heavy traffic) over 79 km via A90 and EO90. Our private transfer costs €90 for a car with 1–3 passengers or €130 for a van with 4–8 — the vehicle price you see is the price you pay at booking.
On arrival: The driver waits in the arrivals hall of the airport terminal, after baggage reclaim and the exit from customs, holding a sign with your name. If the flight is late, the driver adjusts to the real landing time; 60 minutes of waiting are included and help with the luggage is part of the service.
Rethymno is the third city of Crete, about 60 km east of the airport along the new national road (E75 / VOAK), which runs along the north coast via Souda, Georgioupoli and Episkopi. The drive takes around 50 minutes. The road is a dual carriageway with sections of two lanes, and in summer there are slow stretches near beach junctions. Tolls are not charged on this route.
The old town of Rethymno lies around the Venetian harbour and the Fortezza fortress on the headland. The narrow lanes, the Rimondi fountain and several mosque minarets are within a few minutes of each other, and the old centre is largely pedestrian. Hotels are spread between the old town and the beach strip to the east. The long sandy beach starts right next to the old town, and the bus station is on the west edge of the town.
Public transport: No direct service from the airport. The usual route is the KTEL airport bus to Chania bus station and then a KTEL coach on the north coast road to Rethymno.
