Dún Laoghaire is a harbour town on the south side of Dublin Bay, about 24 km from the airport. The usual route runs south on the M1 and through the Dublin Port Tunnel, which is tolled, then crosses the River Liffey and continues through Ballsbridge to the coast road via Booterstown and Blackrock. An alternative uses the M50 ring road west and south of the city. The coast road and the approach through Ballsbridge are often congested on weekday mornings and evenings.
The town faces a large granite harbour enclosed by the East and West Piers; the East Pier is a popular promenade ending at a lighthouse. Marine Road runs from the seafront and the DART station up to George's Street, the main shopping street, while the People's Park and the National Maritime Museum are close to the water. Sandycove, with the Forty Foot bathing place, and the village of Dalkey lie a short distance further south along the coast. Seafront hotels and those on the main streets can be reached directly by car.
Public transport instead: Dublin Bus (TFI) bus 41 (Swords Manor - Lower Abbey Street) or 16 (Dublin Airport - Ballinteer) from Dublin Airport TFI bus zones to O'Connell Street / Lower Abbey Street, city centre. Iarnród Éireann (DART) train DART southbound towards Bray / Greystones from Connolly or Tara Street station to Dún Laoghaire, 1 change. No direct public transport from the airport to Dún Laoghaire: travellers first reach the city centre by bus and then take the DART south from Connolly or Tara Street.
