Porto-Vecchio (Portivechju in Corsican) is the main town on the south-east coast of Corsica and the base for the beaches of Palombaggia and Santa Giulia. The airport sits inland in the commune of Figari, so the drive crosses the countryside of the far south: out on the D322 airport road, then east on the D859 through the villages of Sotta and Ceccia, entering Porto-Vecchio from the south-west. The road is two-lane all the way. In July and August traffic builds up on the approaches to town, especially around the shopping area and the port.
The old town stands on a hill inside the Genoese walls, with the Place de la Republique, the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the Porte Genoise looking down over the salt marshes and the gulf. Its lanes are narrow and partly closed to cars, so the driver stops at the nearest street open to traffic. Below the old town lie the marina and the bus station on the port esplanade, and the commercial port for ferries is close by. Many hotels and holiday homes are spread around the gulf, on the road to Palombaggia and north towards Cala Rossa.
