Siena is a medieval hill town about 80 km south of Florence, centred on the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, home of the Palio horse race on 2 July and 16 August, and the striped Duomo. The route is the raccordo autostradale Siena-Firenze, a toll-free dual carriageway. The historic centre is a ZTL, closed to non-resident vehicles, and the streets are steep and narrow, so the driver stops at the edge of the old town. During the Palio the town is crowded and more streets are closed.
Siena grew on three ridges, and the Piazza del Campo lies in the hollow where they meet, with the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia, which is 102 metres high. The Duomo stands higher up, with its marble floor, and the Basilica of San Domenico holds relics of St Catherine. Long-distance buses arrive at Piazza Gramsci, about ten minutes' walk from the Campo.
