Agrigento is on the south coast of Sicily, about 170 km from Catania, and is known for the Valley of the Temples, a UNESCO-listed archaeological park with Doric temples. The route crosses the island on the A19 and the SS640, a journey of around two and a half hours. The park has several entrances and car parks, and cars cannot drive between the temples. The summer heat is intense in the valley, so most visitors go early in the morning or in the evening.
The Valley of the Temples is a ridge south of the town of Agrigento, where the Temple of Concordia, one of the best-preserved Doric temples, the Temple of Juno and the Temple of Heracles stand along a path. The Kolymbetra garden lies in a hollow of the valley, and the archaeological museum is near the park. The town on the hill has the Via Atenea and the Cathedral of San Gerlando. The white cliff of the Scala dei Turchi is about 15 km west. In February and March the Almond Blossom Festival fills the town.
