Argostoli is the capital of Kefalonia, set on the inner shore of a bay on the west side of the island. The airport lies near Svoronata on the south-west coast, roughly 9 km away, and the road north passes the villages of the Livatho area before descending towards Lassi and into town. The drive normally takes 15 to 20 minutes. The town was rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake, so streets in the centre are wider than in many island towns, but parking near the seafront is scarce in summer.
The centre of Argostoli spreads around Vallianou Square, with the pedestrian Lithostroto street running from it lined with shops and cafes. Along the harbour front, the fish market area is where loggerhead turtles are often seen in the water, and the stone De Bosset bridge crosses the Koutavos lagoon at the southern end of town. The quay also has the small ferry to Lixouri across the bay. Hotels are mostly in the grid of streets behind the seafront, and cars can reach their entrances except on the pedestrian streets.
