Sami is the main port on the east coast of Kefalonia, facing the island of Ithaca across the channel. From the airport the route runs north towards Argostoli and then east across the mountainous centre of the island, climbing over a pass and descending to the coast, a distance of roughly 35 km. The drive takes about 40 to 50 minutes. The mountain section has bends and gradients, and in summer ferry traffic adds vehicles near the port.
Sami spreads along a curved harbour, with the ferry quay at one end and a promenade of cafes and tavernas facing the water. Hotels are in the small town and along the shore road, and cars can reach most entrances. Two well-known natural sites are close: the underground Melissani lake, whose roof has partly collapsed to let in sunlight, lies a couple of kilometres north near Karavomilos, and the Drogarati cave is a short drive inland. Antisamos beach, framed by green hills, is reached by a winding road east of the town.
Public transport: No direct public service from the airport; the usual route is the seasonal airport bus to Argostoli and the KTEL Argostoli - Sami bus (twice a day Monday to Friday, once at weekends in the current timetable).
