Skala is a resort village near the south-eastern tip of Kefalonia, around 40 km from the airport. The drive follows the road along the south of the island, through farming villages and past the foothills of Mount Ainos, and usually takes 50 minutes to an hour. Parts of the road are winding with village crossings, so progress is steady rather than quick. Traffic is light for most of the year, with more coaches and rental cars on the road in high summer.
Skala has a long beach of sand and fine shingle running along the east side of the village, with sunbeds, tavernas and hotels behind it. The village centre is a few streets of shops and cafes inland from the beach, and the remains of a Roman villa with floor mosaics are preserved near the centre. Hotels lie in and around the village, many with road access to the entrance. The port of Poros, with ferries to Kyllini on the mainland, is a short drive north, and Ratzakli beach lies just to the south.
Public transport: No direct public service from the airport; the usual route is the seasonal airport bus to Argostoli and the KTEL Argostoli - Skala bus, which in the current timetable runs only on Mondays and Fridays at 11:30.
