Molyvos, officially Mithymna, is a castle town on the north coast of Lesbos, around 70 km from the airport. The route skirts Mytilene and follows the main road west across the island to Kalloni, then turns north through olive groves to Petra and along the coast to Molyvos. The drive takes roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. The road crosses hilly country with many bends, and in summer the last stretch near Petra and Molyvos carries more traffic.
Molyvos climbs a steep hillside below a large medieval castle, with stone houses and tiled roofs stacked on the slope. The old lanes are cobbled and too steep and narrow for cars, so arrivals stop on the road along the lower edge of the town or near the small fishing harbour. Hotels are spread along this lower road and on the slopes towards the beach, a pebbly strip below the town. The thermal springs and beach of Eftalou lie a few kilometres to the east, and Petra is about 5 km to the south.
Public transport: No direct public service from the airport; the usual route is the urban Airport bus to Mytilene and then the KTEL Lesvos Mytilene - Petra - Molyvos bus (Monday to Friday at 11:00 and 13:10, Saturday at 13:00, no Sunday service in the current timetable; about 1 h 30 min, 8.30 EUR to Molyvos).
