Petra is a seaside village on the north coast of Lesbos, about 68 km from the airport. The drive goes past Mytilene and across the centre of the island on the main road to Kalloni, then north on the road towards Molyvos, reaching Petra shortly before it. Allow around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. The middle section climbs through hills and olive groves on a winding road, and traffic is light outside July and August.
Petra is built around a tall volcanic rock in the middle of the village, topped by the church of Panagia Glykofilousa, reached by more than a hundred steps. A long sandy beach runs in front of the village, with tavernas and small hotels along the seafront road, where cars can reach most entrances. Lanes behind the beach are narrow but drivable at low speed. The 18th-century Vareltzidaina mansion can be visited in the village, the resort of Anaxos lies a few kilometres to the south-west, and Molyvos is about 5 km north.
Public transport: No direct public service from the airport; the usual route is the urban Airport bus to Mytilene and then the KTEL Lesvos Mytilene - Petra - Molyvos bus, which stops in Petra (Monday to Friday at 11:00 and 13:10, Saturday at 13:00, no Sunday service in the current timetable).
