Plomari is the main town of southern Lesbos, about 46 km from the airport. The road leaves the Mytilene area westwards along the shore of the Gulf of Gera, then climbs inland through olive-covered hills and the villages of Plagia and Agios Isidoros before descending to the coast. The drive usually takes 55 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes. The hill section has tight bends and passes through village centres, so progress is steady rather than fast.
Plomari is built in tiers above its harbour, with a seafront lined with cafes and fishing boats and a maze of narrow lanes climbing behind it. The town is known for ouzo, and the Varvagianni distillery runs an ouzo museum at its eastern edge. Cars can reach the harbour front and the hotels on the outskirts, while the upper lanes are best walked. Most beach hotels are in Agios Isidoros, about 3 km to the east, which has a long pebble beach; Ammoudeli beach lies just west of the town.
Public transport: No direct public service from the airport; the usual route is the urban Airport bus to Mytilene and then the KTEL Lesvos Mytilene - Plomari bus (Monday to Friday at 11:00, 13:15 and 14:50, Saturday at 13:00, no Sunday service in the current timetable; about 1 h 15 min, 5.50 EUR), which also stops at Agios Isidoros.
