Mytilene (Mytilini) is the capital and main port of Lesbos, on the south-east coast of the island. The airport sits on the shore south of the town, about 7 km away, and the road runs north along the coast past the villages of Neapoli and Varia before entering town near the commercial harbour. The drive normally takes 10 to 15 minutes. Traffic builds up on the harbour front at ferry times and on weekday mornings, when the town centre is at its busiest.
The centre of Mytilene wraps around the southern harbour, where Sappho Square, the ferry quay and a long row of cafes face the water. The dome of the Church of Agios Therapon rises just behind the waterfront, and Ermou Street, the old market street, runs north from there towards the second, northern harbour. The castle stands on the wooded hill between the two harbours. Ermou is narrow and lined with shops, so most drop-offs are on the harbour front or the streets just off it, a short walk from the hotels.
