Cartagena is a port city on the Mediterranean, founded in antiquity and for centuries the main base of the Spanish navy. From the airport the route runs south on the RM-17 to the A-30 motorway, which descends across the Campo de Cartagena plain; near the city it joins the AP-7 for a short stretch and enters the centre on the CT-31 western access road. The drive is about 33 km, which makes Cartagena only slightly further from the airport than Murcia itself.
The old town lies between the port and five small hills. Calle Mayor and Calle del Carmen are pedestrian shopping streets lined with modernist buildings, and the Roman Theatre sits below the Concepción hill, next to the ruins of the old cathedral. The cruise terminal and the seafront promenade are at the foot of Calle Mayor, beside the town hall. Hotels in the centre are reached by car up to the nearest open street, and the naval Arsenal occupies the western side of the harbour.
Public transport instead: Interbus (Interurbana de Autobuses) bus Airport - Cartagena from Región de Murcia International Airport (stop by the car park) to Cartagena bus station, limited timetable published by Interbus (Murcia - Airport - Cartagena, valid 15 April - 31 December 2026).
