Los Alcázares is a seaside town on the western shore of the Mar Menor, a shallow salt-water lagoon with warm, calm water that suits families. From the airport the route goes south on the RM-17 to the A-30 motorway, leaves it towards the Campo de Cartagena and continues east on the RM-F14 local road through farmland to the coast. The drive is about 33 km. The town lies between San Javier to the north and the Mar Menor Golf area inland.
The town stretches along several kilometres of lagoon shore, with sandy beaches such as Las Palmeras, La Concha and Los Narejos, and wooden piers reaching out into the water. A seafront promenade links the beaches, and most apartments and hotels are a short walk from it; cars can reach the streets just behind the promenade. Santiago de la Ribera and San Javier, with the Air Force Academy, are about 7 km north, and La Manga is visible across the lagoon.
Public transport: No direct public bus from the airport to Los Alcázares: the Interbus airport lines run only to Murcia and Cartagena, so the trip needs a change of bus.
