Pompeii is the Roman city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, about 25 km south-east of Naples, and one of Italy's most visited archaeological sites. The drive uses the A3 motorway towards Salerno with the Pompei Ovest exit, or the SS18. The site has several entrances; Porta Marina is the main one, and the nearby car parks are paid. The excavation area is closed to cars and visitors walk inside, with shade scarce in summer. The towns around the ruins are busy with scooters and tour coaches.
The excavations of Pompeii cover about 66 hectares inside the old walls and are entered at Porta Marina on the west side, close to the station of Pompei Scavi, or at the Piazza Anfiteatro entrance on the other side. Inside, the Forum, the amphitheatre and the House of the Faun are the main sights, and the Villa dei Misteri lies outside the main area, a short walk from the Circumvesuviana stop of the same name. Tickets are timed in the busy season. Summer midday heat is strong and shade is scarce.
Public transport instead: EAV train Circumvesuviana (Sorrento line) from Napoli Garibaldi (after Alibus from the airport) to Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri — about 35–40 min, every 30 min, 1 change.
