Sorrento is a resort town on the Sorrentine Peninsula, about 50 km south of Naples, with views of the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius and the lemon groves around it. The road follows the A3 motorway and the SS145 Sorrentina, which is narrow and jammed in the summer, especially on weekends. The old centre has narrow streets and a ZTL near Piazza Tasso, so the driver stops at the nearest permitted street. Sorrento is the usual starting point for ferries to Capri and for the Amalfi Coast.
Sorrento stands on a terrace above the Bay of Naples, and the centre is arranged around Piazza Tasso, with Corso Italia, the main street, running past it. The Circumvesuviana terminus is on Corso Italia, a few minutes from the square. The Villa Comunale park has a viewpoint over the bay, and a lift and steps lead down to the small port of Marina Piccola, where ferries leave for Capri, Naples and the Amalfi Coast. Marina Grande is the old fishing quarter. Ferries are fewer outside April to October.
