Palau is a small port town on the northern tip of Gallura and the departure point for the ferries to the La Maddalena archipelago. The drive follows the SS125 Orientale Sarda north from Olbia through the countryside of Gallura and the town of Arzachena, where the road becomes Viale Costa Smeralda, and continues on the same road to Palau. It is a single-carriageway road with roundabouts; in summer, traffic builds up near Arzachena and at the entrance to Palau when ferries arrive and depart.
The ferry terminal for La Maddalena is at the harbour, at the bottom of the main street, so passengers continuing to the islands can be dropped right at the port. On the headland east of the town, Capo d'Orso has the granite rock shaped like a bear that gives the cape its name. West of Palau, Porto Pollo is a long beach known for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Hotels and holiday homes are spread around the harbour, along the coast towards Capo d'Orso and around Porto Pollo, and most are reachable by car.
